Building Bright Futures

As part of Vision 2020 and inspired by the success of its learning centers in Mongolia and Cambodia, BOOKBRIDGE chose Sri Lanka as its third country. The Sri Lankan Scout Association had been selected as the key partner in the country. Scouts were active across the country and could help in reaching out to the right people in the communities where learning centers would be setup. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Scouts Association in September 2015 to ensure on-the-ground support.

In September 2015, Carsten, Monika and Rasheed travelled around Sri Lanka, undertaking a rapid assessment of where to start BOOKBRIDGE’s first Learning Center. During their travels, they visited Uva province and drove through Bandarawela on their way to Badulla, the district capital. At the time, Monika envisioned Bandarawela as the type of location that would be most suitable for a BOOKBRIDGE Learning Center. One year later Bandarawela Learning Center was set up.

To date, the Country Organization is composed of four independent Learning Centers (Bandarawela, Kekirawa, Batticaloa and Uva - Pelwatte) established during the Capability Programs. As a partner of BOOKBRIDGE GmbH, BOOKBRIDGE Sri Lanka hosts the Capability Program, leading to the creation of a tangible new social enterprise with every program. Sujitha leads the process to recruit the Community Hero, find local talents to join the program and they further develop the Learning Centers after the program.
